Tips For Better Test Taking and Better Scores

Tests are an important part of your education and something you can’t avoid. For many the idea of tests is very stressful. In fact, some of the brightest students suddenly find themselves with an empty brain when it comes to taking test. Here are some tips for better test taking and better scores.

Taking the Test

When you take a test, the object is for you to demonstrate you understanding of particular course material that has been covered. Many believe forgetting information they have learned will be the cause of a low mark or failure. You might be surprised to learn that the carelessness is actually the number one reason for a low grade or failing a test.

For example, if you are taking a multiple choice test circling the wrong answer, if you are taking a true/false test forgetting to circle one of the options, or if you are doing short answer or essay questions failing to follow the direction that are given. Those are the main areas of carelessness.

In almost 40% of all tests that resulted in a failing grade a pass could have been achieved just by reviewing ones answers and correcting the oversights. Let’s look at some ways to better prepare for your test and avoid careless mistakes.

Review Past Tests
Review previous tests you’ve taken for the same course. This can reveal the type of test and the tone of the tests by that specific instructor so that you can better target your studies. Previous tests are also an excellent way to review for your final exam.

Arrive At Least 15 Minutes Early

There’s nothing worse than flying into the class just before the test starts. You’ll be flustered and disorganized for the entire test. Instead, arrive at least 15 minutes early. This gives you time to make sure your pencils are sharp, your eraser is handy, your pen is working, you have your dictionary or other necessary books, your calculator is with you, and so on. It also gives you a few minutes to relax and center yourself so that you are in your best frame of mind when you go to write the test.

Relax
Chose a spot in the classroom that makes you feel more relaxed. Maybe it’s a window or a fan that circulates the air. Maybe you like to be near the back of a class. Whatever it is find your best space.

Once your seated keep your attitude positive. Remember that you’ve been studying so you are prepared, and there’s no reason to be worried. Tell yourself to relax. Take deep breathes, close your eyes, and focus. Get yourself centered and ready to write the test. Avoid talking to other students. Their negative energy and uncertainty can be contagious.

Now let’s look at what you can do during the test taking to ensure you receive a good mark.
Carefully Read the Directions
The number one reason for careless mistakes is not reading the directions carefully and thus not following them. Take your time. Read them more than once to make sure you really understand what your instructor wants.

Review the Test
While you might not always have time to do a quick review of the entire test, do so whenever time permits. Look for key terms, and make brief notes if something comes to mind.

Answer Your Questions Strategically
Start by answering the easy questions. They build confidence, and ensure correct answers on your test, which can help, build your score. Otherwise, if you go in order you might not get far enough to answer some of the questions you knew the answers to.

Then move on to the more difficult questions. Answer what you think you know, leave blank those you have no clue. Don’t waste time on these right now. Once you’ve gone through the test then go back to those you left blank.

Review
Finally, make sure you leave yourself time to review all your answers. Make any changes you want to make. Watch for spelling and grammar errors as well as punctuation. Correct along the way.

There you have it. These tips will help you do better on your next test and thus enjoy a higher score.
