Online Pharmacy Education Made Easy
So you’ve decided to back to school to become a pharmacist or pharmacist technician – good for you! But one question that comes up often is whether a degree from an online pharmacy tech school is as recognized as a pharmacy degree from a traditional university.
Your online pharmacy technician degree or pharmacist degree can be as recognized as any from a traditional institute. You should always choose a university or college that’s accredited. There are many accredited pharmacy schools online so how do you know which one to choose? Rankings are a great way to create a short list of online pharmacy schools. Then you can use other criteria to short list even more.
Why should you care about online pharmacy school rankings? They are important because they are an indication of not only what a school has to offer but also how it fares (ranks) in what it offers. Those rankings are created by the opinions of those that are not paid staff of the university or the college. Let’s look at some of the areas where you might find rankings.
• Accreditation
• Average GPA of students attending the university/college
• SAT scores of those accepted
• Acceptance rates
• Graduation rates
• Ratio of students to faculty members
• Endowments
• Alumni giving
• Fiancial aid opportunities
• What the administrators from other universities/colleges think about this university
• The resources the university/college has available to students
Which Rankings Are Most Important?
Some areas will be more important to you than others, depending on what you and your career goals. Before putting face value into the rankings, you need to have a look at the methodology that has been used to create the rankings. By knowing this you can make certain you are comparing on an even platform.
Which Online Pharmacy School Rankings Can You Believe And Depend On?
The best way to determine which online pharmacy technical colleges and/or universities you can rely on is to have a look at the rankings of many online pharmacy schools. If you see ranking overlap between universities/colleges then it is likely they are using methodology that is sound and that you can depend on.
If you find rankings are way outside the average than you should discard those rankings and search for schools of pharmacy that are within the norm. And of course you should never rely just on the rankings of online pharmacy schools to find the best pharmacy school for you.
Besides Rankings What Else Should You Evaluate?
You should evaluate a wide array of criteria to help you make the best choice of an online pharmacy school for you. The more research you do, the happier you will be with the decision you make.
Your education is an investment in your future. By completing your education and becoming a licensed pharmacist tech or pharmacist, you are investing in your future and the amount of money you will earn. Those with a career earn significantly more over their lifetime. By choosing a career you are making a commitment to a much better lifestyle than those with just a high school education will ever be able to enjoy
While there are many areas you should evaluate when choosing among the top pharmacy colleges or universities, here are a few of the most important.
• Accreditation – cannot be stressed enough since many employers will only recognize degrees earned from accredited pharmacy schools online. This is especially true in a career such as a pharmacy tech or pharmacist where licensing is involved.
• Location – while you are taking your degree online the location of the actual facility is important. You may be required to complete some lectures on-campus, you may be required to pass additional licensing if you earn your degree outside your state, your grants or scholorships may apply only within your state, and the list goes on. Know where your online pharmacy school is located because it could become a determining factor.
• Class Size – you might not think class size is important when you are attending an online pharmacy school, but it is, because if there are too many students for the instructor you could have long delays in getting assistance when needed or getting your papers graded.
• Communication – how do the instructors communicate with their students? Do they use email, voice mail, telephone, live chat, or all of these. The more easy it is to speak with your instructors the more appealing the online pharmacy school becomes.
• Students Opinion – what do the students that are currently going to this pharmacy school think of it and what do those already in the work force think about it know that they have perspective. Do they feel they got the right type of education to open doors in the field of pharmacy?
• Degree Comparison – compare the programs offered among the various online pharamcy schools and see which online pharmacy degrees have the best curriculum and the best electives to choose from.
• Financial Aid – the ability to obtain financial aid is an important part of a decision to attend a particular school. Explore the options the online pharmacy tech schools have to offer.
What You Should Know About Pharmacy Technician Diploma Mills
You may have heard about diploma mills already. If not it’s important that you are aware of what they are and what they offer. As with anything if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
You can’t expect to send money, do a couple of small courses, and earn a diploma that’s going to be recognized in the real world. It simply will not be. And while you might be able to impress your friends with your new piece of paper it will do nothing to improve your career opportunities and they are certainly not an investment in your future. You want to avoid diploma mills completely.
The Higher Education Opportunity Act defines an entity as a diploma mill under the following:
(A)(i) offers, for a fee, degrees, diplomas, or certificates, that may be used to represent to the general public that the individual possessing such a degree, diploma, or certificate has completed a program of postsecondary education or training; and
(ii) requires such individual to complete little or no education or coursework to obtain such degree, diploma, or certificate; and
(B) lacks accreditation by an accrediting agency or association that is recognized as an accrediting agency or association of institutions of higher education (as such term is defined in section 102) by– (i) the Secretary pursuant to subpart 2 of part H of title IV; or (ii) a Federal agency, State government, or other organization or association that recognizes accrediting agencies or associations.
Pharmacy Diploma Mills Red Flags
• If the price is much cheaper than any other similar programs it should make you question.
• If the only address you have available is a PO Box it should be a red flag
• If you are able to obtain more than one degree at the same time or for the same low price be prepared for a degree that’s not worth the paper it’s written on.
• If you can earn your degree or diploma based on your life experience without having to take any course it’s a diploma mill.
• If you are guaranteed to receive your diploma or degree within a few weeks or months it’s not a ligitamate degree.
While in some careers a degree or diploma from a diploma mill might get you in the door of a business, in the field of pharmacy technician or pharmacist you will be required to provide credible documentation from an accredited university or college, so save your moeny.
There you have it. You have plenty of information to help you make the right decision about the online pharmacy school you want to attend.
