The Advantages & Disadvantages of an Online Degree

It was not long ago when the thought of earning an online degree would have called for snickers and scoffs from most prospective students and employers; but not today. The world is changing and the educational environment is changing right with it. It should have been expected that with the advent of computer technology someone was going to figure out that you could study right from your home. The thought has certainly become reality and students are signing up in droves. In addition, most employers are beginning to recognize the value of a good online degree.

Convenience, Convenience, Convenience

Although there will always be something special about attending a school of higher learning in person you cannot ignore the popularity of online educational programs. Even your most reputable universities now offer online courses and require all students to take some of their classes online. Studying at home offers convenience and flexibility. If you are already working and trying to better your career you can come straight home and pursue that education online. If you are a work from home Mother than it is beneficial to be able to study around taking care of your children. In addition studying online from home does not add wear and tear on your car. There are some students that will have trouble learning at home without physical instructor supervision but for the most part students with good self motivational skills can strive as easily online as off.

Working At Your Own Pace

Of course studying online for your degree does offer you the opportunity to work at your own pace, at least to a certain extent. You still have deadlines that have to be met. You have the opportunity to decide how you will meet that deadline but you still have to meet it. No doubt procrastinators will have a rough time participating in an online degree course. However, these same students can have trouble in the physical classroom as well. You have to have self- motivational skills regardless of where you study. Pursuing a degree requires responsibility. That responsibility transcends the physical and online educational world. As a student you either have that mindset or you do not.

The Price Is Not Always Right

There are some whom are led to believe that because you pursue an online degree it is going to be cheaper. This is foolishness. A reputable online degree is going to cost you nearly the same as an on campus degree. Just as with on campus degrees you can apply for scholarships or grants to help you with your online degree as well. When you take online programs you can pay for them by the course, term or semester. You will find no major advantages here for online degrees.

The Legitimacy Of Online Degrees

Although it is getting better some still have their doubts. This is mostly due to the history of ‘fake mill degrees’ that were offered for years. Employers have been placed into a position where they have to take notice of online degree programs. There are just too many students pursuing this method from nurses, educators, engineers and business professionals. There are too many sharp individuals entering society with reputable online degrees for it too be underestimated any longer. Even Yale and Harvard have initiated their own online degree programs. These two prestigious schools realized that the online degree phenomenon was not going away and they know more than anyone that higher education is big business. They want to continue to be a major part of that business.

The advantages of pursuing online degrees out weigh any possible disadvantages. Technology has brought us to this educational horizon and now we will see where that road eventually leads us.
